Boston University School of Medicine Fluorescent Test Results

Boston University School of Medicine Results of Fluorescent Testing The Results are In!! !

The Boston University School of Medicine has conducted tests that show Zoo Med’s Reptisun UVB, and Iguana Light  Boston University School of Medicine Fluorescent Test Results  UVB bulbs convert 7-DHC to previtamin D3 with a conversion rate 23 times higher than the leading UVB reptile bulbs!

Vitamin D is produced in two steps. First, the isomerization process of 7 dehydrocholesterol (preD3) is catalyzed using ultraviolet B (UVB). The radiation from the test lamps was applied to ampouled samples of 7DHC in hexane for 15 minutes. The samples were then analysed by high-performance liquid chromatography in order to determine the percentage of 7DHC converted into preD3.

Zoo Med Laboratories’ (San Luis Obispo) Reptisun and Iguana Light bulbs were tested. Both showed a high ability to convert 7-DHC to preD3… The results are represented in Figure 1, which is a diagrammatic representation of the data. – David M. Jackson, Ph.D.

ReptiSun 5.0/Iguana Light 5.0

According to an independent laboratory analysis, this product contains the highest amount of UVB and UVA waves. The UVB wavelength can help prevent or reverse Metabolic Bone Disease among green iguanas and other species of lizards kept in captivity. All captive turtles, tortoises and other reptiles benefit from a stronger and better shell.

UVA wavelength stimulates appetite and physical activity in captive reptiles, amphibians, and helps induce reproductive behavior.
It is safer than synthetic D3 powders or liquids, because the UVB wavelength enables all reptiles to regulate their Vitamin D3 levels through endogenous synthesis. This is how they do it in nature! The UVB wavelength eliminates the risk of an overdose in vitamin D3 (highly toxic).

Wavelength penetrates 10-12″ away from the surface of the bulb. We use pure quartz glass sleeves.
The UVA/UVB spectrum of the bulb remains effective from 1 to 1 1/2 years. Replace bulbs annually.

Useful Hints

Physically, it is impossible for an incandescent filament made of tungsten (screw-in light bulb) emit UVB wavelengths. ReptiSun 5.0 and Iguana Light 5.0 are the perfect UVB solution for you!
Avoid placing the bulb on glass, acrylic, or plastic as it will block out UV rays.
ReptiSun is best used in conjunction with the ReptiSun Light 5.0, Iguana Light Light 5.0, or the ReptiSun Light 5.0 to get the maximum output of UVB, UVA and visible light.
Use more than one bulb to cover the enclosure for reptiles that require high UVB (chameleons and bearded dragons).
